Lecture Abstract:
Not unlike the Parsis, many Jews sailed across the Arabian Sea from the Gulf/Middle East and found their way to Gujarat, establishing successful trading routes, building vibrant communities, and integrating harmoniously and effortlessly into Indian life and culture. Both Bene Israeli and Baghdadi Jews settled in Gujarat, and over the approximately three hundred years of their presence in the region, their contribution to commerce, education, and civic reform (among other things) has been significant, especially in the context of their minuscule numbers.
Only about 170 Jews remain in Gujarat today, their numbers declining since the creation of Israel and their migration to their ancestral homeland. However, their rich legacy and contribution to Indian commerce, education, civic reform, and nation-building continue to positively impact and inspire Indian life today.
In this presentation, I will focus on four centres of commerce and civic activity in Gujarat — Surat, Baruch, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad — where Jewish presence played an unmistakable role in establishing thriving trade routes and hubs of trade and cultural exchange. Besides archival research and the work of established scholars, researchers, and academics, I will also reference monuments, landmarks, and institutions as evidentiary material to illustrate how successfully Jewish travellers and merchants established bases for economic activity, leading to the formation of thriving Indian Jewish communities across the state of Gujarat.
I will then expand upon how this development informed Jewish life in India and how it translated into contributions to the Indian nation well into the twentieth century.
