Maritime Connections: Jews Across the Indian Ocean

O.P. Jindal Global University, Delhi NCR, India

16-18.2.2026

Introduction

An international conference will explore the historical evaluation of Jewish Networks and Knowledge Exchanges Along the Indian Ocean. The conference will focus on Trade, Religion, Culture, and the Development of Social and Intellectual Movements from antiquity to modernity. This conference aims to provide a comprehensive platform for scholars to examine the relationships between these communities and their pivotal roles in the cultural and economic dynamics of this crucial maritime region.

Historical and Geographical Significance

The Oceanic Turn in historiography reframes the Indian Ocean from a vast, isolated expanse into a channel of communication with a vibrant network of exchange and interaction. The Indian Ocean has served as a crossroads of civilizations, linking East Africa, the  Mediterranean, Middle East, and South Asia through extensive trade networks.  Research on Jewish history has seldom addressed the role of Jews in the interconnectedness of the various regions around the Indian Ocean. Yet, Jewish communities, deeply integrated within these networks, have left an indelible mark on the history of the region, shaping trade, culture, and social dynamics.

The conference seeks to highlight the historical and modern trajectories of the ties between these communities. We invite submissions of papers presenting new research on the movement and connections between Jewish communities along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea. We hope that this conference will serve as a catalyst for further research in this field, and we are open to the possibility of publishing the conference proceedings in a suitable academic forum.

Thematic Scope

We invite submissions that address the following themes:

  1. 1.  Historical Evolution and Movement:
The development and movement of Jewish communities in the Indian Ocean, Red Sea, and Persian Gulf regions from ancient times through the modern era, with an emphasis on how these communities interacted and evolved through migration and cross-cultural exchange.
    2.  Trade and Commerce: The economic contributions of Jewish traders in the Indian Ocean, focusing on commodities and their integration into global markets.
    3. Cultural and Religious Interactions: The blending and retention of Jewish traditions across different Jewish communities, reflected in literature, art, architecture, customs, and daily life.
    4. Diasporic Networks: The connections between Jewish communities in the Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, and Red Sea regions and their counterparts in the Middle East, Europe, and beyond.
    5. Maritime Geography: The role of strategic ports and sea routes in shaping Jewish migration and settlement patterns across the Indian Ocean.
